An eruption of violent clashes between protesters and riot police has swept across Indonesia, triggered by public fury over the death of a delivery driver.

The unrest, which has been described as the most significant and violent since President Prabowo Subianto took office, has also been fueled by widespread anger over financial perks for lawmakers amid economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens.

The catalyst for the protests was a viral video that appeared to show an armored police vehicle running over motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan. The incident ignited demonstrations that have spread to several major cities, including Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya, drawing hundreds of students and "ojek" motorcycle taxi drivers to the streets.

The protests, which began over the weekend, quickly escalated, with a council building in eastern Indonesia being set ablaze, a fire that resulted in at least three fatalities.

In response to the growing civil unrest, President Prabowo has issued a call for calm and has ordered a comprehensive investigation into Kurniawan's death. The president also took the extraordinary step of canceling a scheduled trip to China, choosing instead to remain in Indonesia to personally monitor the volatile situation.

In an attempt to control the spread of information and calls for protest, the social media platform TikTok temporarily suspended its live feature in Indonesia.

The protests underscore deep-seated tensions in Indonesian society, where a significant portion of the population feels marginalized by the political elite. The perceived disregard for the public's well-being, highlighted by the legislative perks, has created a fertile ground for dissent. The tragic death of a working-class individual, captured on video and disseminated widely, served as the breaking point, uniting various segments of the population in their demand for justice and accountability.

The government's actions, including the president's direct intervention and the promised investigation, are being closely watched as a test of its ability to manage public discontent and address systemic issues of inequality and police conduct.
